Tisane

Tisane is a word that means herbal tea.
This means any herb that is not composed of the tea plant, Camellia Sinensis.
Tisane is made from the flowers, leaves, stems, roots, bark, seeds and berries of plants.
True tea comes from the plant Camellia Sinensis, typically just the leaves and may include stems. While tea goes through specific steps of processing to become green, black, oolong, puerh, etc herbal teas are simply made of some part of the plant and dried.

While I care deeply for the medicine that is in tea, I also have a passion for learning about all kinds of plants for the flavour profiles, medicinal properties and general effects they have on the body. Over time, I have learned a lot about herbs and am constantly learning more. Then people tell me about another obscure plant that I ought to know about. I can’t keep up with the amount of knowledge that comes through. I also can’t keep up with how many blends I could be creating! When I create a new infusion and like it, I go back and measure out the ingredients to preserve and make it again in the future; eventually making labels and selling it as part of my inventory. I have to limit myself so the ones that have made the cut are the ones I feel most strongly about. When I create a blend, I aim to give it an earthy character that feels grounding. I’ll then use herbs that are naturally sweet to balance it out, and in certain blends, just enough flowers that it is full of flavour but not overwhelming. Earthy, but not quite mud (lol).

Most herbs are medicinal in one way or another. I try to pair herbs that work together towards a certain goal (lung health, sedative, etc) while paying attention to the presence of flavour for each herb by weight. I love doing my research about the plants. It all goes into the intuition well of my brain and when I make something new, it hits. Then I know. Over time I learn more about them and get excited over what I didn’t know at the time and then discovered.
